2005 International Conference of
Management Science and Applications
(ICMSA) Held in Chengdu
By Bochun Xia
The 2005 International
Conference of Management Science and Applications (ICMSA) was held in
Chengdu on June 20-22. The conference, sponsored by the Chinese University
of Hong Kong, Sichuan University, Southwest Jiaotong University, and
Nanjing University, was widely attended. Over 130 domestic and 40 overseas
scholars registered the conference. The National Natural Science
Foundation of China partially funded the
event. The conference was also supported by Chinese Academy of
Science, Operations Research Society of China, System Engineering Society
of China, Tsinghua University, and Chengdu Municipal Advisory Commission
of Science and Technology.
In the opening ceremony, Prof. Lu Tiecheng, chairman of the Association of
Science and Technology of Sichuan and former president of Sichuan
University, and Mr. Chen Xiaotian, standing deputy director of the
Department of Management, National Natural Science Foundation of China,
extended their warmest congratulations to the conference. They
emphasized that while theoretical research and advancement remain
top priority for the academic community, it is equally important to
promote applications of management science in the real business world.
Three world-renowned scholars gave keynote speeches in the plenary
session. In his talk, George Shanthikumar of University of California at
Berkeley discussed the issue of incorporating model
uncertainty and learning in management science. Dilip Madan of
University of Maryland surveyed some of the products introduced in the
equity market of the world and analyzed their rationale. David Yao of
Columbia University illustrated the virtue of the asymptotic
optimality --being "simple but
not simpler." All three speeches were well received by
the audience.
The participants presented high-quality research works and shared latest
development in various management science-related areas such
as supply-chain/ logistics management,
optimization and control, information management and E-Commerce, service
and revenue management, decision analysis, financial engineering and risk
management, behavioral finance, MS/OM education, etc. The conference
offered nine special sessions. Among the speakers are:
The program committee of the conference was co-chaired by Duan Li
(The Chinese University of Hong Kong) and Baichun Xiao
(Long Island University/The Chinese University of Hong Kong).
Participants of the conference were particularly impressed
by the organization and service of local hosts, Southwest Jiaotong
University and Sichuan University.

The 5th International
Conference on Numerical Optimization and Numerical Linear Algebra Held
in Lhasa,
Tibet, August 8-12, 2005
By Yong Xia
The International Conference on Numerical Optimization and Numerical Linear Algebra was successfully held in Lhasa, Tibet in China from August 8 to 12, 2005. This conference was the 5th of the binnial conference, with previous ones being held in Qingdao (1997), Nanjing (1999), Dunhuang (2001) and Guilin(2003). The conference was organized by State Key Laboratory of Scientific and Engineering Computing, Institute of Computational Mathematics and Scientific Engineering Computing, Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Tibet University. The sponsors of the conference include National Natural Science Foundation of China and Chinese Mathematical Society.
Many local officials and scholars attended the opening ceremony, including Mr Tamula (Deputy secretary general of the Tibetan Autonomy Government), Professor Ling-Min Pang (President of Tibet University), Professor Daluo Sanglangjie (vice president of Tibet University) and officials from the Education Department and the Science and Technology Department of Tibetan Autonomy Government. The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Ya-xiang Yuan, the conference chairman. Professor Ling-Min Pang and one of the invited speakers, Professor T. Terlaky from McMaster University, delivered speeches at the ceremony.
There were about sixty participants attending the conference including twenty oversea participants from USA, Canada, Japan, Germany, UK, Brazil and other countries. The invited speakers included
Lectures given in the conference were on recent advances of numerical optimization, numerical linear algebra, and their applications. Due to the excellent academic lectures and the high altitude of Lhasa, participants all agreed that this conference is really a high-level conference
First
South Pacific Conference on Mathematics Held in Nouméa,
New Caledonia, 29/08-02/09, 2005
By Henri Bonnel
The First South Pacific Conference on Mathematics/Première Conférence
de Mathématiques du
Pacifique Sud,
(SPCM2005), co-organized by the Universities of New Caledonia, Fiji,
Tahiti and the Institute of Research for Development (IRD) of Nouméa,
has been successfully held at IRD in Nouméa,
New Caledonia, 29/08-02/09, 2005.
This
international meeting, somehow a consequence of «Les Assises
de la Recherche Française
dans le Pacifique,
Nouméa 2004 », opened
a series of conferences in mathematics which will be organized every two
years by the South Pacific mathematics community. Thus, SPCM2007
will be organized in Fiji in January 2007, and SPCM2009 will take place in
Tahiti in August 2009.
The
conference main topic was Optimization and Control.
However, some other mathematic fields like: Algebra,
Algebraic-geometry, Probability and Dynamical Systems have also
been represented.
About
40 renowned mathematicians from 12 countries attended the conference and
presented 9 plenary talks (one hour) and 30 regular talks (30 minutes
long). The conference was a good opportunity for these researchers to
exchange their recent results and to discuss about some possible joint
projects. Also, it was useful for the mathematic community, to discover
that it is possible to do some good mathematics research in the tropical
islands of South Pacific!
The
chairman of the organizing committee, Professor Henri Bonnel -director of
ERIM- from the University of New Caledonia, announced the beginning of the
conference. Mr. C. Washetine -the representative of the Government of New
Caledonia for Research-, Mrs. S. Lagarde -the first Vice-President of the
“Province Sud” as well as Dr. F. Colin -the director of the IRD- and
Dr. A. Fages -the President of the University of New Caledonia- gave the
welcome speeches respectively. Finally, the co-organizers Dr. Jito
Vanualailai -the head of the Department of Mathematics- from the
University of South Pacific, Fiji, and Professor Jean-Marie Goursaud
-director of GAATI- from the University of French Polynesia, Tahiti
welcomed the initiative of organizing this conference. After this opening
session, the first plenary talk concerning a mathematical modeling of New
Caledonia Abore Reef ecosystem is given by Professor M. de Lara from
CERMICS-Ecole nationale des ponts et chausses- Paris, France.
The
following experts presented plenary talks:
J.-M. Bonnisseau (Université Paris I)
P. L. Combettes (Université Paris 6)
M. de Lara (CERMICS, École nationale des ponts et chaussées, France)
M.
Ehrgott (University of Auckland)
M.
Fukushima (Kyoto University, Japan)
A.-N.
Iusem (IMPA, Rio de Janeiro)
V.
Jeyakumar (University of New South Wales)
L.
Paunescu (Sydney University)
L.
Qi (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University)
The
selected conference talks will be published in a special issue of “Pacific
Journal of Optimization”.
