The 3rd China-Australia Workshop on Optimization Theory, Methods and Applications has been held in Shanghai, the largest commercial city of China from December 16-19, 2007.

This workshop was organized by Department of Mathematics and College of Science at Shanghai University. The workshop was also partially sponsored by Chongqing Normal University. Prof,. Sun Wu , Vice-President in Shanghai University, Prof. Yang Xinming, Vice-President in Chongqing Normal University and Prof. Luo Wencong, Vice-Dean of the College of Science attended the opening ceremony of the workshop. Prof. Sun Wu and Prof. Liansheng Zhang , the chairman of the workshop, delivered the welcome speeches. Prof John Yearwood, Director of Center for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CICAO) in University of Ballarat introduced the development of CICAO to all participants.

The workshop had been an intensive and rich one. It had about 50 participants and  presenting talks were 29 presentations. The topics of presentation covered many aspects of optimization fields. The discussions among the participants had involved for a wide range of useful ideas and suggestions. Invited speakers of the workshop includes Prof. Kok Lay Teo from Curtin University of Technology, Prof. Shu-cherg Fang from North Carolina State University, Prof Luan Li from Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. John Yearwood, Dr. Adil Bagirov and Dr. Musa Mammadov from University of Ballarat.

The workshop provided an international forum for researchers with interests in optimization, optimal control and decision and mining. Many participants used the opportunity to exchange of ideas and approaches by presenting research results and sharing experience for future developments on optimization. The workshop also organized small panel between the experts of University of Ballarat and China University of Mining and Technology for discussing the potential collaboration in future.

The workshop was a great success. The 4th Australia- China on Optimization Theory, Methods and Applications will be held in University of Ballarat in 2008.
