Dear all,

It is one year since Alex left us.....
I attach an important message from Professor Sidney Morris about Alex
Rubinov PhD Scholarship.

During this year 8 of Alex's papers were submitted and published, 48
papers of his friends were dedicated to a memory of Alex, there were
seven dedicated sessions at the European Conference on Operational
Research ( organised by Adil Bagirov, Regina Burachik, and Rafail
Gasimov) and the session at INFORMS International Conference, 
Puerto-Rico 2007 (organised by Janos Pinter).

We have met many of Alex's friends and colleagues from Australian
Universities, beginning from September 7, when Professor K. Teo had 
a meeting with Alex's Research team. 

We would like to thank everyone for the participance, in particular 
Professor Terry Mills ( Latrobe University), Professor Kok Lay Teo 
(Curtin University), Professor Lou Caccetta (Curtin University) 
for their contribution to the memorial meeting on September 8
organised at UB by Adil Bagirov.

Dear Friends,
many thanks for your touching messages to a memory of Alex,
I will forward them to ORB and CIAO Research Newsletter.

Here are just a few sentences from Regina's message:

".......Alex taught me that mathematics can be much more than just a
list of technical facts. He showed us how mathematics can be
understood also as a wonderful network of people, countries and ideas,
and that each theorem and each definition is intrinsically connected
with the people and the circumstances that generated them. ....."

Next year for the first time, UB will offer a PhD scholarship to a new
mathematics student. Preference will be given to a student in
optimization. The scholarship will be known as the Alex Rubinov Research
Scholarship in honour of Alex and his fantastic contribution to PhD
supervision in ITMS.
